What locks do we need on a front wooden door?
We would normally advise people to have a good quality Rim/Nightlatch and also a 5 lever BS mortice lock. Mortice locks which carry the British Standard kite mark are the only locks approved by insurance companies for wooden final exit doors. BS3621 has recently been upgraded (2004), and while this is not being demanded by some insurers, we would advise that this type of lock is fitted. A door chain and door viewer is also recommended
Are sliding patio doors secure?
When sliding patio doors were first produced they often had inferior locks fitted. It was also found that it was very easy for a burglar to lift the door off the track and completely remove the door. Later models have been improved greatly, they now use multi-point locking strips and have devices which prevent the door being lifted off the track.
If you have an earlier type door it’s not necessary to have it replaced. There are many aftermarket devices and locks available which can be retro fitted, these will greatly improve your security.
Why can’t I remove the key when I’ve locked my Upvc door?
This is a common fault and is generally caused by wear and tear. The cylinder can be re-set, however if wear is present the problem will re-occur, as such we would always recommend a replacement cylinder.
Why is it difficult to lock my Upvc door?
This can be several things, i.e, it could be a faulty/worn cylinder or multi-point lock or the door may need adjusting. To eliminate the first two, try operating the handle and lock with the door open, if it operates and locks smoothly then the problem is with the door alignment, if not then the problem is with the mechanism itself.
Can I have one key for all my locks?
The short answer is yes, however how easily this can be done depends on what locks are currently fitted. If for instance you have all Upvc doors fitted it is relatively easy to have the cylinders replaced with ones which operate off the same key. It will be more difficult (but still possible) if you have a mixture of door/lock types fitted.
Do you supply keys for window locks?
There are hundreds of different window lock manufacturers therefore it is not generally possible to obtain replacement keys. These locks are relatively inexpensive however, therefore it would probably be more cost effective to have them replaced.
How do I secure an outward opening door?
Assuming this is a wooden door then our advice is to fit a 5 lever (BS3621:2004) mortice lock. If the door is not your final exit door then key operated mortice bolts – fitted to top and bottom – should also be fitted. The hinges on outward opening doors are also very vulnerable to attack therefore hinge bolts should always be fitted.
